音楽におけるシークエンスとは
シークエンスとは、音楽の一節がより高いまたは低い音程で繰り返されることです。
繰り返しは正確に転調することができ、本当のシークエンスとなり、音程が変化することがあり、調性的シークエンスとなります。 (
これから様々な例を示しながら、音楽におけるシークエンスを解説していきます。

この例は分かりやすくシーケンスが示されていると言えますね。
短いメロディ・フレーズを演奏した後、より高い音程で繰り返す様子や、
同じパターンをより高い音程で再度繰り返す様子などがわかります。
シーケンスの種類
音楽で目にするシーケンスは、大きく分けて2種類あります。
- Melodic Sequence – これはメロディの繰り返しです（上の例のように）
- Harmonic Sequence – これは一連の和音の繰り返しです（後で説明します）
「シーケンス」という言葉が使われるとき、一般的にはメロディとハーモニーの両方の素材を使用していることを意味します。
Melodic Sequences
Tonal sequence
調性配列では、音間の音程がある程度変更されます。
音程のサイズは通常同じまま（つまり、4th、5th、など）ですが、音程の質が変わります（例えば、マイナー音程がメジャー音程になるかもしれません）作曲者が調を変更しないように望むならこの質の変化は必然なのです。
配列の例では、2 つのメロディで音程のサイズが同じままであることがわかります (最初のメロディの 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd は、繰り返されるメロディでは 3rd, 3rd, 2nd, 2nd のままです)。
しかしながら、音程の質は変化します（最初のメロディーの長3、短3、長2、短2が、繰り返しのメロディーでは短3、長3、長2、長2になります）。
これらの質の変化は配列の4小節すべてを通して続くので、この配列例は調性配列となります。
リアルシーケンス
リアルシーケンスでは、音程の大きさも質も変わりません (これは通常、作曲者がシーケンスが進むにつれてキーを変えなければならないことを意味します)。
If we convert our example of a sequence into a real sequence it would look as follows:

Can you hear how the music sounds like it is changing key (modulating) as the sequence progresses?
Mixed Sequence
A sequence that has several repetitions, some of which are tonal and some of which are real is called a Mixed Sequence.
In the example above you can see that the sequence between the 1st two bars is a real sequence, whilst the remaining bars are tonal sequences.
Harmonic Sequences
Descending Harmonic Sequences
Descending Circle-of-Fifths Sequence
This sequence gets its name from the fact that each successive chord has a root note that is a fifth lower than the previous chord.
Descending Thirds Sequence
In a descending thirds sequence the chords move down a third for each repetition, hence the name.
Ascending Harmonic Sequences
Ascending Circle-of-Fifths Sequence
In an ascending circle-of-fifths sequence each chord’s root is a 5th higher than the previous chord in the sequence.
Composing Using Sequences
Sequences are an excellent tool for composing music – I use them in a lot of the pieces I write.
