海洋・リーフ水槽に適した水は、非常に純粋な状態であるためRO/DI水です。 市販のソルトミックスには、必要な塩分とミネラルがすべて含まれています。 塩分濃度は、水中に溶けている塩分やミネラルの含有量を表し、1000分の1（ppt）で測定されます。
水槽内の塩分濃度を測定する最も簡単で一般的な器具は比重計です。 比重計とは、液体の密度や比重を測定する装置です。
塩分濃度と比重は関係がありますが、同じではないことを理解することが重要です。
比重は密度を表し、塩分濃度は塩の実際の重量を表します。
浮ひょうは、固体がその中に浮かんでいる液体の自重を変位させるという原理に基づいて動作します。
比重計は、固体が浮遊する液体の自重で変位するという原理を応用したもので、60F（15.55C）を初期点として、蒸留水1.000で校正される。
測定器は60F（15.55C）で校正されているので、正確な測定値を得るには、検査する水の温度も60F（15.55C）である必要があります。

Water will expand or contract if temperatures vary; therefore the density fluctuates with temperature as well. The chart below shows the actual density in relation to the water temperature.

A marine tank maintained at a temperature of 82 F (27.77 C) with a hydrometer reading of 1.021 は実際の比重 1.0237 になります
塩分濃度
例:
80 F に維持され、比重が 1.022 の海洋タンクは、塩分濃度 31.8 ppt
比重の安定は、重要な要素です。 少しでも変動があると、何らかの影響が出るきっかけになります。 水槽から蒸発するのは真水のみで、塩分やミネラルは残ります。
さらに、水位も重要です。淡水が蒸発すればするほど、残った水の密度が高くなり、塩分濃度が高くなります。
新しいソルトミックスのバッチは、水の交換時にのみ必要です。
比重計による測定は、測定値に影響しないよう気泡が入らないよう水面下で行います。 使用後の比重計は、残留物を避けるために真水で洗い流してください。
